Accommodation Standards

Accommodation is graded according to its type (Hotel, Bed & breakfast, Self catering, Restaurant with rooms, camping and caravanning) by stars by a number of bodies including:

Each organisation now uses identical criteria; click on one of the above links to view them.  In a small number of cases you will see the following grades:

  • Awaiting Grade.  The propery has applied to be graded by VB, VW or the AA but has not yet been inspected.
  • Ungraded.  The owner has chosen not to opt in to any of the recognised grading schemes and therefore there is no redress to any grading organisation if standards are below your expectations.

Food Awards

We have noted next to an eating place entry where an AA Rosette or Michelin Star has been awarded, as these are readily recognisable to visitors.  The Michelin system remains the most famous star system. A single star denotes a very good restaurant in its category, two stars excellent cooking, worth a detour, and three stars, exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey.
